2017 GCA Western
2017 marks the end of an era - the last time that the Greyhound Club of America held its Western specialty conformation show and lure coursing trial in Lompoc, California. We made the trek out for the fourth year in a row, with hopes to have a great time with friends new and old.
Friday was the GCA Western specialty show, and we had Rowan, Sonic and Phoenix entered. Phoenix showed remarkably well, and won the Open Bitch class but was not awarded the points in Winners. Rowan represented himself well, but has truly embraced retirement and is no longer terribly interested in playing the showman. The true star of the day was Sonic, who despite being the smallest, most workmanlike dog in the Specials lineup, showed like a million bucks with our good friend Mary Perry and was awarded Best of Opposite Sex by Dr Edna Martin for a huge 5pt major towards his Grand Championship, and went on to win Best Dual Champion as well - which retired the Windrock Challenge Trophy!!
Saturday at the Lompoc Kennel Club supported entry, neither Sonic nor Phoenix were awarded anything, but our main focus for the day was the Lure Coursing trial held that afternoon, where Sonic was entered as a Special while I worked at Field Trial Secretary. Sonic put out two phenomenal runs and was awarded High Scoring Bench Champion as well as being the highest scoring hound of ANY entry, but alas, luck was not with him in the Best of Breed runoff and he suffered a nasty lineburn in his groin, causing him to check up at one point during the course and ruining his chances at a second GCA Lure Coursing BOB. But the winner was a lovely and very nice running veteran who finished her Dual Championship, so we were happy to cheer them on for a very deserving win.
Sunday morning was a bit crazy, as a blown spark plug led to Casey having to leave me at the show grounds with the dogs while he sought out a mechanic that was open and available to fix up the van for the 850mile trip home. Despite my being a bit out of sorts, we were determined to make our last Lompoc show day one to remember, and we definitely succeeded! Our judge for the day was Nancy Liesing, and she not only awarded Phoenix first place in the Open Bitch class, but put her up for Winner's Bitch and Best of Winners for a 4pt major, as well as awarding Sonic the Select Dog placement, also a 4pt major!! As you can see in the photos, it was pretty much impossible for me to stop smiling - what an incredible way to close out our fourth and final trip to Lompoc.
