2017 GCA Central weekend
This year the Greyhound Club of America hosted a big three-specialty weekend in Greeley, CO in conjunction with the Evergreen Kennel Club shows. On Friday, September 8th there were back-to-back conformation specialties, the first time we had gotten to show to two separate judges on the same day. Sonic showed very well but was not shortlisted for any awards, and Rowan won the Coursing Dog class in both AM and PM shows. Phoenix usually takes a show or two to settle in, and was awarded 3rd in the Open Bitch class at the AM specialty, butby the afternoon had started to remember the show-dog game and won Reserve Winners Bitch!
Saturday's show was a wash for both Sonic and Phoenix, but the afternoon was our real focus - the lure coursing trial! There was a total entry of 16 Greyhounds, 15 competing in the trial plus a Singles entry. The course was quite challenging, with rough vegetation and a big hill to test the dogs' stamina, agility and speed both up- and downhill. The big winner -- SONIC!! This is the second year in a row he has won BOB for the GCA Central lure trial, although with the big entry it was definitely a more exciting win than last year's 5-dog trial. He was also awarded High Scoring Dual Champion!
We wrapped up the weekend with one more show on Sunday, September 9th, and it was definitely a great end to our trip - Phoenix was Winners Bitch and Best of Winners and Sonic was Best of Opposite Sex and Best of Breed Owner Handled for a 5pt major and his first BOB win in the show ring!! This was such a proud day for me, as it meant that all of the majors needed for Phoenix's Championship and Sonic's Grand Championship were earned in specialty supported competition, which is traditionally much tougher than that found at regular shows.
